Origin mattress composition

The Origin is a hybrid mattress, combining different comfort layers to provide you with a perfectly supported sleep. ✨

origin hybrid mattress

These layers include:

1. SnowTencel top cover

The Origin Hybrid mattress features a top cover made from 100% SnowTencel, a fabric known for its softness and breathability.

This hypoallergenic material ensures a comfortable and cool sleeping surface, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin.

The perimeter of the cover is made from a grey cotton blend fabric.

Overall, the cover looks and feels high quality. 🧵

The sides of the cover also have handles, which makes moving the mattress around easier.

The only downside is that the cover is not removable or washable, so we'd recommend using a waterproof mattress protector with the Origin mattress.

2. Origin HexaGrid layer

The HexaGrid orthopaedic layer is a unique component that makes the Origin mattress stand out from other hybrid mattresses on the market.

Made of a specialised blend of polymers and cooling gels, this foam layer with hexagon-shaped grooves is designed to cradle pressure points and offer relief to joints.

The layer is divided into thirds with a firmer midsection for extra support for the back.

3. 100% natural latex layer

The IceCool foam layer is made of 100% natural latex infuxed with a special cooling gel.

This provides cushioning and support, and is particualrly beneficial for sleepers with back and joint pains.

4. Bamboo-infused wool layer

The next layer is made up of responsibly-sourced bamboo wool and other materials, and is designed to increase air flow and breathability.

You may also want to check out the Panda Hybrid Bamboo Pro mattress as a bamboo option.

5. ErgoCoil steel pocket springs

The pocket spring layer is designed with support in mind, with separately-encased springs giving individual support to each area of the body.

This helps keep the spine elevated and minimises motion transfer.

The spring layer also encourages maximum airflow as excess heat can escape between the springs. 🌬️

6. D-2 edge support

An edge support layer made of foam that's 2x denser than your average foam increases the comfort area of the mattress and makes getting in and out of bed easier.

Origin mattress comfort

The best way to test a mattress is - you guessed it - to sleep on it! 😴

So, how did the Origin Hybrid mattress fare in our sleep test?

Is the Origin Hybrid mattress suitable for side sleepers?

Most of the British public are side sleepers, and our sleep testers are no different.

Side sleepers require a medium-feel mattress that contours around pressure points while providing support for the spine.

Take a look at how the Origin mattress supported our male and female testers in the side position:

side sleeper on origin mattress

Unfortunately, the mattress was too firm for the side sleeping position.

You can see how the mattress doesn't contour around the shoulders, creating tension and misalignment in the back.

Our testers experienced some discomfort and felt that a mattress topper would have helped to absorb some of the pressure from the joints.

If you're a side sleeper, we'd recommend choosing a softer mattress, such as the Simba Hybrid, which has proved to be more effective at providing pressure relief on the joints.

Is the Origin Hybrid mattress suitable for back sleepers?

Back sleeping is considered the healthiest sleeping position by sleep experts. 👩‍⚕️

Most back sleepers require a medium-firm mattress that has some cushioning around the hips and shoulders whilst promoting a straight spine.

Again, you can observe how this fared in our test:

We found the Origin mattress to be fairly suitable for back sleepers.

The spine was optimally aligned, and the joints and heavier regions were mildly absorbed by the HexaGrid layer.

However, it was slightly more suited to our heavier male sleep tester. ✔️

Our lighter female tester found that the Origin mattress was still a bit too firm for this position and would have felt more comfortable on a slightly softer mattress.

The Emma Luxe Cooling mattress is one of our favourite options for back sleepers.

Is the Origin Hybrid mattress suitable for stomach sleepers?

Stomach sleeping is less common, yet some people can only find comfort when lying on their front.

Stomach sleepers require a firm mattress and soft and low pillow to encourage the spine and neck to be neutrally aligned. 🥰

The images below show you how our testers slept on their stomach:

Our testers found the Origin Hybrid mattress to be the most comfortable in the stomach sleeping position. 💕

The firm feel of the mattress was ideal for keeping the spine perfectly aligned with the neck, reducing lower back pain in this position.

In fact, the Origin is one of the few mattresses we've tested that provides adequate firmness and support for front sleeping.

Origin mattress firmness

The Origin Hybrid mattress is described as having “soft and firm support", but we’d definitely place it at the firmer end of the scale. 🧱

We rated it an 8.5 out of 10 on our Sleep Hero firmness scale, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest.

origin mattress firmness

This is significantly firmer than many other bed-in-a-box mattress brands, which typically come in a medium-firm rating.

We measured firmness and edge support for more accurate results, which you can read about below:

Measuring sinkage depths and mattress firmness

We wanted to see how much the mattress absorbed our weight when concentrated on one area. ⚓

standin on origin mattress
The mattress had a sinkage depth of around 11 cm (4.3”).

The sinkage on the Origin is fairly minimal compared to some other mattresses we’ve performed this test with. 🤔

This is a good indication of the firmer support of the Origin Hybrid mattress.

Heavier-weight people will be more comfortable on this mattress as it can absorb more weight in a single area without them plummeting to the base.

We also measured the sinkage depths of the shoulders and pelvis in various sleeping positions:

Female Tester (56 kg / 124.4 lbs) Male Tester (82 kg / 182 lbs)
Side sleeping Shoulders: 1.5 cm (0.59”)
Pelvis: 5 cm (1.9”)
Shoulders: 3 cm (1.18”)
Pelvis: 6 cm (2.36”)
Back sleeping Shoulders: 0 cm (0”)
Pelvis: 3 (1.18”)
Shoulders: 3 cm (1.18”)
Pelvis: 3.5 cm (1.37”)
Stomach sleeping Shoulders: 0 cm (0”)
Pelvis: 3 cm (1.18”)
Shoulders: 1.5 (0.59”)
Pelvis: 3 cm (1.18”)

As you can see, there is very little sinkage overall.

This is preferable for stomach sleepers and heavier weights who will benefit from minimal sinkage.

If you like to sleep atop your mattress without sinking in too deeply, you'd probably enjoy the comfort of the Origin Hybrid.

Measuring edge support

We tested how well the Origin mattress absorbed weight at the very edge.

Bad edge support can be a dealbreaker for those who like to sit on the edge of their bed in the morning. 🌅

sitting on edge of origin mattress

kneeling on origin mattress

Overall, the Origin mattress had excellent edge support.

When sitting on the edge of the bed, the mattress could absorb our weight even when focused on one area and had minimal sagging.

If you’re looking for a firmer-feeling mattress that doesn’t hug around the body as much, the Origin mattress is a solid choice.

Does the Origin mattress sleep cool?

We experienced a cool and breathable sleep on the Origin mattress and didn't experience any overheating. ❄️

This is likely because the Origin Hybrid mattress is designed with multiple cooling features:

  • The SnowTencel fibre used in the top cover is designed to be cool to the touch.
  • The HexaGrid layer contains cooling gels.
  • The IceCool foam is made of 100% natural latex, which is cooler and more breathable than other foams.
  • The bamboo wool layer is designed to enhance air flow and breathability.
  • The pocket springs create natural ventilation channels for additional cooling.

When it comes to hybrid designs, the Origin matress is equipped with some of the best cooling features around.

If you struggle with overheating at night, you may want to opt for an organic mattress, read our tips on cooling down a room, or invest in an air cooler.

Is the Origin mattress good for couples?

If you wake up from your partner's movements during the night, you're unlikely to get a good night's rest - and this probably also means you have a high motion transfer mattress.

Motion transfer refers to how much motion is transferred across the mattress.

kitty on origin hybrid mattress

Couples would be looking for a low motion transfer mattress that can effectively absorb motion, preventing you from feeling your partner when they move on the other side.

The Origin Hybrid mattress has excellent motion isolation, and is therefore well-suited to couples and restless sleepers.

Read more about how we tested motion transfer:

Testing motion transfer

We tested motion transfer by having one tester lay down on the mattress with their eyes closed while the other tester made as much movement as possible on the other side.

Our tester felt minimal movement even when the other tester was jumping up and down on the other side of the bed. 🦘

Our Sleep Hero kitty also likes to jump on and off the bed at night, but we weren’t disturbed by his movements either.

If you’re a restless sleeper or you usually get disturbed by your partner moving around in bed at night, the Origin Hybrid mattress may be the answer to healing that relationship rift.

Origin mattress sizes

The Origin Hybrid mattress is available in most standard UK sizes, including:

The mattress has a standard depth of 25 cm (9.8") but the one we tested fell slightly short of this at 24 cm (9.4").

This is not unusual for bed-in-a-box mattresses and generally a 2 cm (0.7") leeway is accepted.

origin mattress depth

The Origin Hybrid mattress has a recommended weight capacity of up to 240 kg (639 lbs), depending on the size of the mattress you purchase.

This makes it a suitable option for heavier-weight people.

The Nectar mattress is designed to support weights over 290 kg (938 lbs), so this is also a great alternative option.

One of the great advantages of the Origin mattress is that it’s much more affordable than competing bed-in-a-box brands. 💰

Our testers felt that the overall quality was very good value for money.

Origin also has fantastic sales throughout the year, with as much as 40% off the regular price, and you can find many great Origin mattress coupon codes online.

Origin mattress delivery and trial conditions

The Origin mattress comes with free next-day delivery within the UK, or delivery within 1- 2 business days.

Our Origin Hybrid mattress arrived promptly, but unlike other brands, it was not packaged in a cardboard box - we were later informed that this was because the mattress was shipped directly from the company's factory.

Typically, your Origin mattress should be packed in a carton box for additional protection.

origin mattress rolled up

Our delivery driver was on his own and asked us to help him carry the mattress from the van and take it upstairs ourselves, which we were more than happy to do.

However, some less able people may have struggled in this scenario.

In this case, we'd recommend choosing a brand like Simba, which offers two-person delivery to your room of choice.

Unpacking the Origin mattress

As we unwrapped the Origin mattress, we were surprised to see it was rolled in multiple layers of plastic. 🤨

We counted between 3 - 4 plastic layers, and unwrapping all of these felt a bit like pass-the-parcel.

Eventually, we could unroll the Origin mattress, which began to expand immediately.

Once we cut away the final layer of plastic, it expanded to its full size within seconds.

origin mattress expanding

unwrapping origin mattress

We were very impressed with how quickly the mattress expanded.

However, we also have some concerns about the multiple plastic layers and what impact this might have on the environment. 🌎

If the environment is a concern, you should consider a more sustainable brand, such as Hypnos or Harrison Spinks.

Origin mattress returns and trial period

Every Origin mattress comes with a 200-day risk-free trial and free returns, which you automatically enrol in with your purchase.

From the day of delivery, you then have 200 days to sleep on your mattress and decide if it’s a good fit.

If you find the Origin mattress unsuitable, simply contact Origin Mattress UK via the website.

They’ll arrange to pick up your mattress for free, and once it’s received back, you’ll get a full refund. 💰

Please remember, though, that it should be returned in good condition.

What happens to returned Origin mattresses?

You might be curious about what happens to your Origin mattress if you return it during your trial.

You can sleep well knowing these old mattresses do not go to waste.

Every refunded mattress is donated to the British Heart Foundation [1] to go to someone in need.

Origin mattress guarantee

Your Origin mattress also automatically qualifies for a 15-year warranty. 🤞

This protects you from:

  • Visible indentation (more than 2.54 cm/ 1 inch) caused by manufacturing faults
  • Any physical or structural flaw that causes the foam to split/crack

However, the warranty will not cover you if the fault is caused by accidental damage.

Accidental damage includes using an unsuitable bed frame, washing the cover, stains, tears, burns, or damage caused during a move.

We highly recommend using a waterproof mattress protector, such as the Nectar mattress protector, for additional safeguarding.

This not only protects your warranty from unexpected accidents but also improves the overall longevity of the mattress and decreases bacteria and dust build-up.

Are Origin mattresses any good?

We think the Origin mattress is an excellent budget-friendly option for those looking for firmer support. ✔️

It’s a particularly good option for:

  • Stomach sleepers
  • Heavier weight sleepers
  • Those looking for orthopaedic support

However, we don’t think this mattress is for everyone.

If you're a side sleeper, of lighter weight, or generally prefer sinking into your mattress, you may not find the Origin Hybrid mattress comfortable.

Fortunately, the 200-night trial allows you to try it out risk-free before you fully commit to this purchase.

Frequently asked questions

  • Where is the Origin mattress from?

The Origin mattress was developed by a German design team in 2018.

The brand is now available in over 8 countries, including the UK.

  • What else does Origin sell?

Origin Mattress UK has since released some new products alongside the Origin Hybrid mattress.

    These include:

Of these, we've only tested the Pro mattress (review linked above).

  • Origin vs Simba: Which brand is better?

It's difficult to say that one brand is necessarily better than another.

We're fans of the both the Origin Hybrid and the Simba Hybrid, the two flagship models, but they're definitely catered to different people.

    • Choose the Origin Hybrid if you're of heavier weight, a stomach sleeper, or looking for a firmer feel. It's also a good choice if you're looking for great quality at value-for-money prices.
    • Choose the Simba Hybrid if you're of lighter weight, a side sleeper, and looking for a softer feel. It's also the top choice if you're looking for a more luxurious mattress at a premium price.

    Both are excellent mattresses, though.

  • Origin vs Emma: Which should you choose?

Emma used to have many all-foam options, but they're currently only selling hybrid options, much like Origin.

There are still some differences, though.

    • Emma usually features memory foam for a more body-hugging feel, and the mattresses tend to be a little softer.
    • Origin focuses on orthopaedic support but the mattresses tend to be a little firmer.

Both brands offer a 200-night trial, but Emma offers a 10-year guarantee while Origin offers a 15-year guarantee.

Our favourite Emma mattress currently on the market is the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress.
